Cleveland-Marshall College of Law

Legal Writing Assignments

Professor Sandra Kerber

August 4, 2008

Dear Student:

Welcome to Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and to Legal Writing, Research and Advocacy, Law 504 Section 7 or 8.  You should have received from the administration a letter explaining orientation and including your schedule.  As a reminder, your Legal Writing, Research and Advocacy course L 504 begins on Tuesday August 19, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. until 10:40 a.m. in room 12 of the Law Building. I am your professor for this course. Also, you must attend the Legal Writing and Research session, which will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on Thursday August 21st in room 12 of the Law Building.  Attending these two Legal Writing classes that begin on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 is a requirement.

Regardless of whether you are scheduled during the academic year for regular legal writing classes on Tuesday or Thursday, please be advised that you need to keep both Tuesday and Thursday from 12:45 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. reserved throughout the entire academic year for additional training. Generally, both section seven and eight will meet on Tuesdays. I will explain further the organization of the schedule for the academic year.  When you read this letter and if you will not be attending Cleveland-Marshall this fall, please send me an email at sandra.kerber@law.csuohio.edu or leave a voice mail message at (216) 687-2284 and indicate that you will not be in attendance.

You must bring with you to the first class and to all subsequent classes the following five required texts:

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation, Eighteenth Edition
  • Writing and Analysis in the Law, Shapo, Walter, Fajans, Fifth Edition  (2008)
  • Finding The Law, Twelfth Edition, Berring, (Thompson/West 2005)
  • User’s Guide to the Bluebook: Revised,  Dworsky  (optional)
  • Assignments & Authorities, Legal Writing Materials. Prof. S. Kerber  (approximately $4.50 check only) available at the Student Services Center (first floor of the Law Building).

The first four books are available at the CSU Bookstore, 2400 Euclid Avenue.  The Legal Writing Materials, Assignments & Authorities booklet is available at the Student Services Center on the first floor of the Law Building. These materials are essential for completing assignments so you must purchase the 2008 materials.  Please bring a check to the law school when you plan to purchase the Assignments & Authorities, as the Student Services Center does not take cash.

Your assignment for the first class is to read Chapter One, excluding the problems, in Writing and Analysis in the Law, Fifth Edition, Shapo, Walter, and Fajans (2008), and in Finding the Law pp 8-16 (The Big Picture). If you have any questions concerning these matters, please contact me at (216) 687-2284 or in my office (Room 46) of the CSU Law Building.  I am looking forward to meeting you and having an exciting year.

Sincerely yours,

Sandra J. Kerber, Esq.
