Cleveland-Marshall College of Law

Legal Writing Assignments

Professor Claire May

Dear Law Students:

Welcome to your first year of law school at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and to my Legal Writing section.  The following information will help you prepare for our first class session during First-Years’ First Week.  Legal writing class during First-Years’ First Week is mandatory, so please be sure to attend.

Please purchase the most recent edition of each of the following textbooks.  We will also be using my own legal writing text, What Are You Trying to Say? A Guide to First-Year Legal Writing, which is available online by clicking here.  The following textbooks should be available at the University Bookstore and from online merchants such as Amazon.

  • The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th Edition)
  • Tracy L. McGaugh, Christine Hurt & Kay G. Holloway, Interactive Citation Workbook for The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (2008 Edition)

*Please make sure to purchase the Bluebook version, not ALWD of the Interactive Citation Workbook*

  • Laurel Currie Oates & Anne Enquist, Just Research (2005).

For the first class meeting, please read Part I of What Are You Trying to Say? and Chapter 2 of Just Research.  You do not have to write out any of the exercises in the reading, but please look them over and be prepared to discuss them in class.  We will use these two texts during First-Years’ First Week, and add The Bluebook and the Interactive Citation Workbook in the coming weeks.

I look forward to meeting you in class.  If you have questions, please contact me at claire.may@law.csuohio.edu or by phone at 216-875-9842.
