Introduction

Civil liberties are based upon concepts of individual freedom and the freedom from interference, be such interference governmental or non-governmental. Civil rights are based upon concepts of equality and government involvement in the assurance of individuals being treated equally. Civil liberties and civil rights are addressed in principles of constitutional law, which also addresses allocation of government powers.  Key civil liberties and civil rights issues include freedom of expression, freedom of religion, due process, and equal protection, as well as judicial review, federal jurisdiction, federal executive powers, federal legislative powers, and powers of the states.  US Supreme Court cases are emphasized in civil liberties and civil rights law, because the US Supreme Court has a critical role in the interpretation of the Constitution.

Please contact the Law Library's Research Services librarians during their Research Services hours, or via email for help with locating or using any of the resources discussed in this guide.
