Alumni Resource Guide - Libraries

Learn about Library resources available to you:

Wherever you practice, get to know the libraries in your area and what services they offer. At Cleveland-Marshall, we offer special services to alumni, including access to an alumni computer room, and a special borrowing card.   In order to obtain a Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Library alumni borrower's card, submit an application.   Once it has been processed, we will send your borrower's card to you through the mail.

Your firm librarian can be a valuable research assistant. The local public library, county or subscription law library, as well as university law libraries all provide different kinds of collections and service structures which may enhance your legal practice.

You'll also want to get some essentials for your own office library.

Legal information resources represent a substantial investment for a new lawyer. We provide you here with some tips and contact information for making informed decisions as you develop your office library of print and electronic subscriptions. Please don't hesitate to revisit our collection to examine materials you are considering to buy for your own use, or to ask us to recommend titles.

Some suggestions when considering what to buy for your office:

· Consider checking with used law book dealers if you are interested in acquiring a back run of a title.

· Call for a copy of the publisher’s current catalog, or check the publisher’s web site. Even if you aren’t purchasing a title immediately, this may help you identify potential information sources.

· Inquire whether a local sales representative serves your area. The rep may be able to keep you informed of new publications and expedite matters for you.

· When inquiring about the price of a title, also inquire about frequency of supplementation, the projected annual upkeep cost, available format(s), and any combination prices.

· If you have suggestions for improving specific titles or for needed subject areas, let the publisher(s) know.

Contact information for legal publishers is updated on several web sites, including Findlaw's Legal Publishers index, HG.org's Law and Legal Publishers, and AcqWeb's Directory of Publishers and Vendors.
