Cleveland-Marshall College of Law

Course Media Options

There are many options available to faculty who wish to record and/or supplement classroom presentations and make files available to their students. We provide below a summary of podcasting, screencasting and video recording opportunities. All of the options create files which can be posted on the website, or to a TWEN, LexisNexis, or CSU Blackboard course page with the ability to verify if a student has accessed the file.

  • Who can access? We can put files on a webpage with restricted access to Cleveland- Marshall College of Law students and faculty.  Files placed on TWEN or LexisNexis Course pages or blogs or wikis open only the class will be accessable only to members of the specified class. (Caveat: If you restrict a CALI blog to just class members, there will be no RSS feed)
  • Can the files be copied and distributed? CSU's Information Media Services states MediaSite is 99% copy-proof. Camtasia is also very difficult to copy.  Protections can be put in place to make copying audio and video more difficult, but someone with know-how can still copy them.

Podcast (audio)

Presentation Appearance

Audio  only.

Uses
  • Record (1) an exam review lecture or (2) an exam review recorded by the professor without the class present.
  • Record lectures on difficult concepts or any class session.
  • Make a guided tour of the library to point out basic sources or sources on a particular subject.
How To Do It
  • When recording a live class:  Check out a Digital Voice Recorder from the Law Library Information Services Desk.  Return the  recorder, and tell the library staff to give it to automation to put the lecture on the web.
  • When making a recording by yourself, without a class:  Use Audacity software and headset microphone.  The library staff can help you do this.  Send the file to Automation to put on the web.
  • If you need better sound quality, use CSU's Instructional Media Services (IMS) studio.

Ability to Edit

Edits can be made on Audacity, but it is not necessarily intuitive. We recommend retaping is major edits are needed.

Vodcast (video) - College of Law Automation

Presentation Appearance

Live action and audio.  May not work well for Website presentations.

Uses

Use as a substitute for a live lecture, or to enable students to view the lecture again.

How To Do It
  • Automation has digital video cameras which can be loaned to you.
  • Automation can also provide assistance with setting up the camera
  • After recording, the Automation department can convert the video to a format suitable for posting to a course page.

Ability to Edit

With our current tape-based equipment, editing and processing a video takes a significant amount of time (ie, approximately 3-4 hours per hour of recorded video).  New equipment funded through approved technology fees will significantly cut down on processing time, hopefully beginning Spring 2009 semester.
