Quick Start Guide from RefWorks
Usefulness for Law:
Has the choice of Bluebook - Notes and Bibliography or Bluebook - Notes only. Does NOT have brief format.
Automatically creates references for documents from LexisNexis? Westlaw? NO. LexisNexis Academic is the closest. You can manually add references from LexisNexis and Westlaw.
RefWorks can attach documents, but does not have an easy screen capture feature like Zotero.
Organize References
Create a Folder - Folders>Create New Folder
To see what is in a Folder - View>Folders or Folders>View
Creating a Database of Records
Four Options:
Automatically From Some Electronic Databases -
- Such as LexisNexis Academic, Newsbank, JSTOR, Google Scholar, List of Direct Export Vendors. There will be a link in the database results screen to export references.
- In LexisNexis Academic, there is a book icon on the right hand side at the top of the results.
- Check to make sure all needed information transferred. If not, edit the record to include needed information.
Save a Text File of Results from a Database -
- ex. PubMed, Scholar (CSU/C-M Library catalog).
- Save a text file of the results to your computer. Then go to RefWorks and click on Reference>Import. Select the database you saved the text file from. Pull up file from your computer.
- Only works for some databases, not LexisNexis or Westlaw.
Manually:
- Use for LexisNexis or Westlaw
- References>Add Reference
- Select Citation Format - Upper left - "View Fields Used by" -
- Select Reference Type- Case, Journal Article, Bill, Laws/Statute, Book. Then, green check marks will appear beside required fields - ex. name, author, year, etc.
- Fill in the fields
- Set Default Language: Tools>Customize>Reference Edit Options
- Enter a link if desired to locate the document again. It appears our institution does NOT have the attachments feature.
Searching Library Catalogs & Pubmed Directly From RefWorks (including OhioLINK):
Search>Online Catalog or Database
Create a Bibliography
From a List of References:
- Click on Bibliography -
- Select Style - ex. Bluebook
- Pick what folder you want the references from and create Bibliography
Write and Cite Method:
- Write paper in Microsoft Word and insert temporary citation placeholders for RefWorks to fill in later
- Need to download software to use this - Access Download from: Tools>Write and Cite - download version 2 or 3.
Online/Cite View
- Use this if using Browser other than Internet Explorer and/or word processing other than Microsoft Word.
- First open wordprocessing document, then open RefWorks
- Select folder in RefWorks
- Switch to- use pulldown menu and select online/cite view.
- Select references - click on cite link, to create temporary citation. Cut and paste into your document
- Close the document
- Go into RefWorks, click bibliography, select output style - ex. Bluebook
- Click the radio button for Format Paper and Bibliography
- Browse to the document you want to add the bibliography to & create bibliography
