Finding Study Aids

To search for additional books on a particular subject area, either

  • search the catalog using a keyword search for the name of the subject and the name of the type of study aids (see list below). Example: contracts hornbook
  • browse by the same call number as the study aids listed below for a particular subject. Study aids are located in our study aid room A066 and the reference area.

While a catalog record for a particular study guide listed below may only list a reference copy, there is typically another circulating copy in room A066, which you may check out.

Types of Study Aids

Study Aids listed in this guide:

  • Sum & Substance- Outstanding Professor Series (CDs) - Dynamic lectures from top law professors. Times vary from 5 - 11 hours for the entire set of CDs.
  • Law School Legends ( CDs) - Law school professors explain an entire subject in 3 to 5 hours time. Exam tips and explanations of difficult concepts.
  • Nutshells- Nutshells explain the law in a condensed narrative format.
  • Examples & Explanations- Text sections explaining the key concepts, followed by short factual scenarios with questions and answers. Good for studying for essay exams.
  • Understanding Series - Gives the reader an understanding of the area of law. Contains discussion of many of the cases found in major casebooks.
  • Questions and Answers - Multiple choice and short answer questions with detailed explanations of the answers.

Study Aids Typically Not Listed in this Guide:

  • Core Concepts and Key Questions - Outlines, practice questions and answers, both short answer and . multiple choice.
  • Concepts and Insights - Aims to provide a concise treatment of a subject and explain major statutes and cases.  Designed to help students quickly pull together the entire subject area for end-of-semester review.
  • Black Letter Outlines - Outlines summarizing the black letter law and key cases. Sample exams and glossary of terms.
  • Hornbooks are similar to undergraduate textbooks, and explain legal concepts and the black letter law. Written by well respected authors. More dense and academic than other study aids, such as Understanding Series, Examples & Explanations etc., but still clear and fairly concise.
  • The Mastering series, born in 2008, is easy to read and offers key terms highlighted and explained. Each chapter has a beginning road map and ending checkpoints for review.
  • Friedman's Practice Series - Essay exams & multiple choice exams, with answers. Essay exams are actual exams from top law schools.
