First Assignment Fall 2018

Legal Professionalism and Ethics

LAW 643 Section 61

Karen Rubin-Kugelman

Assignment details

Dear Class,

I’m looking forward to seeing you for the Fall 2018 session of “Legal Profession,” L643.

I am attaching your syllabus (which lists our text and the supplement; see below for alternative to purchasing the supplement) and a class participation rubric. Note the assignment for our first class on Monday, August 20. As a ground rule, when the assignment requires you to read a Model Rule, that includes the comments.

Please obtain and use the new-ish Fourth Edition of our text, not the Third.

A note on the paper-bound rules supplement to the text (the supplement is called The Law Governing Lawyers):

· The supplement has the Model Rules of Professional Conduct and their comments, which you will constantly be referring to, plus the Restatement of the Law Governing Lawyers (“RLGL”), which we will be referring to fairly frequently. However, you can access both of those sources for free online. Here is the link to the ABA Model Rules and comments:

· I think you can access the RLGL using your law school Westlaw account. I also have some sections in pdf form on the course materials page.

The important thing is to be able to thoroughly read and absorb the rules, comments, etc. If you like to have a book that you can tote around with you and annotate, etc., buy the supplement, new or used (2016-17 edition or later is fine). If you like the on-line option, feel free to use that. (The supplement seems to be available for Kindle, too.) Our quizzes will be “closed-book, closed computer” if that bears on your decision to buy or not to buy the paper-bound supplement,

You’ll also see on the syllabus that required supplemental reading material and other helpful things are posted on the library’s “Course Reserve” page for this course. The link for that page will be up and running next week, and I will circulate the link and password for you to use ASAP.

You’ll see a number of folders on the Course Reserve page; the supplemental readings are in the folder titled C-M – Assigned Materials, and referenced in the syllabus as “CM”.

· The items I’m attaching to this e-mail will also be placed in the “Syllabus” and “Class Participation” folders on the course page.

Last notes:

  • I do not mind if you eat and drink during class, as long as it is not messy or obtrusive. I am aware that this class bridges the dinner hour and that some of you may be coming to class directly from work.
  • Now and throughout the semester, my e-mail address above is a great way to reach me. Don’t use my official CSU e-mail address – I don’t check that. You, on the other hand, should check the e-mail address at which you receive this message, because I’ll use it to communicate with you about changes in assignments, etc. (unless you give me another preferred e-mail address).

See you on August 20.
