First Assignment Fall 2021

Legal Writing, Research and Advocacy

LAW 504 Section 5, 6

Karin Mika

Assignment details

We are slated to meet during an orientation week next week with classes on Wednesday and Thursday. Thereafter, Section 5 is slated to meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, and Section 6 is slated to meet on Thursdays at 1 p.m. for the remainder of the semester.

These are the textbooks for the semester:

Sources of American Law, a free download available on the CALI site. Here is the link:

https://www.cali.org/books/sources-american-law-introduction-legal-research

Legal Writing with Style (the red Amazon book, not the earlier editions). Here is the link:

https://www.amazon.com/Legal-Writing-Style-Terri-LeClercq/dp/0692578153/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=the+style+of+legal+writing&qid=1628604913&sr=8-7

The Bluebook, 21st edition. The Bluebook should be available in the bookstore or online. The 20th edition would probably be okay too, and once the school year starts, you'll learn how to access the online version through the law library. We won't be using the Bluebook for the first couple of weeks, so if you aren't able to get one right away, that's okay.

In terms of prep for orientation week, please read Chapters 1,3,& 4 of "Sources of American Law." (You need not do any of the exercises for class.) Also, please watch videos 1, and 18-22 in the Crash Course on Government Series. Here is the link:

I have sent this information by way of an email to your Cleveland-Marshall email. In that email I have also attached a tentative syllabus for the semester.
