Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law will recognize two of its outstanding alumni at the Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association’s Annual Recognition Luncheon, to take place at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel Grand Ballroom Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. The CMLAA will recognize The Honorable Terrence O'Donnell of the Ohio Supreme Court ’71 and Terry H. Gilbert ’73 as its Alumni of the Year.
Justice O'Donnell joined the Supreme Court of Ohio in 2003, and is serving his second full six-year term on the court through 2018. His legal career began as a law clerk on the Ohio Supreme Court upon graduation from law school and continued with the firm of Marshman, Snyder & Corrigan in Cleveland, before he began his judicial career with the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, where he served for 14 years until his election to the Eighth District Court of Appeals. Justice O'Donnell has served as chairman of the Ohio Legal Rights Service Commission, which oversees the protection and advocacy of the developmentally disabled and mentally ill statewide, and is credited with initiating Ohio’s Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program, which has gained national recognition.
Gilbert, of the firm Friedman & Gilbert, has been in private law practice for over 40 years, specializing in criminal defense and civil rights litigation. Throughout the years, Gilbert has handled a variety of government misconduct cases involving police abuse, violations of free speech, prisoners’ rights and victims of various forms of discrimination. He has appeared frequently as a legal expert on national and local media including The Today Show, CNN, 60 Minutes and Dateline.
