Intro 101 to the Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association
The Cleveland-Marshall Law Alumni Association (CMLAA) was first formed in 1948. It operates with a program coordinator, an accountant and approximately 40 volunteer C|M|LAW alumni. It has an active Board of Trustees that meets once per month, an Executive Committee that meets between Board meetings and nine operational committees to carry out the good work of the organization. This article was written to provide our fellow grads with some basics on the makeup of our Association and what it does. Before we get started, please allow us one promo: Membership in CMLAA is free! Open the form at the below and follow the instructions to submit.
The C|M|LAW Alumni Association supports, serves, and promotes Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, its alumni, students, faculty, and staff by offering quality educational and professional programs and opportunities designed to enhance the reputation and foster pride and involvement in the Cleveland-Marshall community.
WHO WE ARE
The C|M|LAW Alumni Association is a vital and enthusiastic partner of the College of Law. The Association's Trustees and members make substantial contributions to the academic and social life of the law school. On behalf of our students, C|M|LAW Alumni Association sponsors a mentoring program that matches first-year law students with mentor-lawyers, provides student scholarships, and supports alumni/ae reunions locally and across the country. On behalf of the law school and its 10,000 living graduates, C|M|LAW Alumni Association sponsors a series of Continuing Legal Education programs throughout the year, participates fully in fund-raising events, and each year honors outstanding graduates at its Annual Recognition Luncheon.
WHAT WE DO
The benefits of membership in the Association are invaluable.
We have a number of active committees whose valuable work and input are a source of strength for the College of Law. For the past 22 years, our Professional Opportunities Committee has sponsored an incredibly successful mentor program, matching over 2,500 students with practitioners throughout the area. It is a fabulous program that provides valuable advice and encouragement and offers many networking opportunities for both students and alumni. Our Annual Recognition Luncheon Committee works tirelessly throughout the year to insure a successful Annual Recognition Luncheon, an impressive event that is consistently the largest gathering of attorneys in the state of Ohio and another effective networking tool. Our Minority Outreach Committee addresses the concerns of our alumni and student minority community and implements programs to address those concerns. Our Faculty Relations Committee is designed to maximize the relationship between the College of Law and our alumni, and this year received a very favorable response to the involvement of our alumni practitioners in the classroom. And last, but certainly not least, is our Student Relations Committee, which offers instructional programs and social events for the students, and of course, another opportunity to network.
CMLAA provides thousands of dollars of scholarships to deserving law student applicants funded by Life Membership dues, our CLE programs and the net proceeds from our flagship event, the Annual Recognition Luncheon.
The Law Alumni Association has always been a resource for employment and we work in conjunction with the C|M|LAW Career Planning office. We receive hundreds of calls from alumni looking for capable attorneys to join them in practice as well as from students and alumni who are searching for employment. We confer with our career planning office and then offer the most helpful connections possible. We also aid students with out of town job placement by enlisting an entire network of our alumni throughout the country in their employment search.
The Law Alumni Association is a fraternal organization that exists solely for the benefit of the alumni, students, faculty and staff of the College of Law. We are an independent 501(c)(3) organization and all of the programs we offer are fully funded and provided for by the Association and its members.
