Colette Gibbons '76, partner in the Cleveland office of Ice Miller LLP where her practice is focused on insolvency related issues, was recognized by Chambers USA in the Bankruptcy/Restructuring practice area.  She has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 2007 and as a Super Lawyer since 2004 and admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy in 2010.

Diane E. Wynshaw-Boris '82, a new Life Member of the C|M|LAW Alumni Association, is campus counsel for the University of California, San Francisco.  After a 24 year absence, Ms. Wynshaw-Boris recently returned to live in Cleveland.

C|M|LAW Alumni Association Honorary Trustee and Life Member Judge Ralph Perk, Jr. '83 was elected Chief Justice of the Delta Theta Phi International Law Fraternity at its biennial convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Judge Perk, retired from the Cleveland Municipal Court, has served as a national officer of the fraternity since 2001.

Jennifer M. Griveas '05, Director of Legal Affairs at Eliza Jennings, a nationally recognized and trusted expert in aging services, is a recipient of the First Chair 2013 Rising Star Award. The First Chair Awards is an annual selection of in-house counsel who have, through their hard work and innovation, made significant contributions to the legal community. The award program honors the top in-house counsel for their achievements in the past year in a wide range of categories.

Kristina W. Supler '06,  a trial attorney at Friedman & Frey, L.L.C. and C|M|LAW Alumni Association Trustee and Life Member, was elected to be a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) at the Association’s 56th annual meeting in San Francisco, California.  Ms. Supler's practice is exclusively criminal defense and focuses on the defense of computer and technology-based offenses. Ms. Supler also works extensively on white collar cases.

Risto B. Pribisich '07 is a partner at Benesch in Cleveland in the firm's innovations, information technology & intellectual property (3iP) practice group. Mr. Pribisich's practice includes all facets of intellectual property and technology law, including intellectual property litigation, patent preparation and prosecution, rendering opinions, negotiating technology transactions and data security counseling.

Philip M. Angelo '09, a new C|M|LAW Alumni Association Life Member, is Special Assistant to Cuyahoga County Sheriff Frank Bova.  In this capacity, Mr. Angelo will work within the Sheriff's department to support a variety of functions, leveraging his experience at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy to further intergovernmental coordination, external affairs with law enforcement partners and community organizations, and project development.

Kevin Brown '09 is a landman in the Canton office of Purple Land Management.

Class of '98 members Amgad Husein and Kevin Luken recently got together in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where they toured historical and religious sites in the Middle East and participated in several seminars focusing on the intricacies of commercial business transactions between the US and Saudia Arabia. Mr. Husein is the managing partner of Dentons & Co. Law Office in Riyadh and practices in the area of international commercial business transactions.  Mr. Luken is an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in Cincinnati, OH.

Leah M. Paul D. Castillo '06 is a Staff Attorney with Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV.  The position is located at the South Central Regional Office in Dallas, Texas, with responsibility for impact litigation, education and public policy work in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

Alan L. Gary (Guerin L.) Avery '66 is a senior consultant at Law Advisory Group Inc. in Pompano Beach, FL, where he advises law enforcement agencies and school districts nationally on best current practices in school safety planning and management.

The $3,700,000 plaintiff's verdict in the medical malpractice case, Sara Jaynes et al v. Marc Goldblatt et al, litigated by Timothy G. Kasparek '74, was recognized in Arizona Attorney as one of the Top 10 largest civil verdicts in Arizona in 2012.

Steven B. Lesser '79 has been chosen as chair-elect of the American Bar Association’s Forum on the Construction Industry.  Mr. Lesser, an Honorary Trustee of the C|M|LAW Alumni Association and a member of C|M|LAW's National Advisory Committee, is a partner in the Ft. Lauderdale firm Becker & Poliakoff and heads the firm's construction law practice. He was named "Construction Lawyer of the Year" for 2011 for South Florida by Best Lawyers in America -- one of only two lawyers in Florida to receive the designation and the only one in South Florida.

Defense attorneys Henry J. Hilow '81 and C|M|LAW Alumni Association President Ian N. Friedman '97 were interviewed extensively on WKYC-TV's Channel 3 News regarding the Ariel Castro kidnapping of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. Mr. Hilow is a partner with the Cleveland firm McGinty Hilow & Spellacy.  Mr. Friedman is the founder of the Cleveland firm Friedman & Frey and is a past President of the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Notre Dame College Vice President David A. Armstrong '89 was named the 14th president of Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, KY.  As Vice President in charge of development, enrollment and marketing at Notre Dame, Mr. Armstrong recently helped the College secure the largest gift in its 90-year history - $2.1 million.

Thomas W. Ostrowski '93 joined the Cleveland office of Tucker Ellis as a partner in the firm’s business department, where he will focus on all aspects of commercial banking. Mr. Ostrowski is experienced in commercial lending, corporate finance matters, asset-based finance, healthcare lending, workouts, real estate finance, and structured finance.

Ann M. Caresani '94, a partner in the Cleveland office of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, was recognized as a  leading lawyer in the field of employee benefits and executive compensation in the 2013 edition of Chambers USA.

Marilena DiSilvio '95 was named President of the Ohio Women’s Bar Foundation for 2013-2014. She was sworn in as the Foundation’s fourth president on May 2nd, 2013 at the Foundation's Annual Meeting in Columbus, Ohio.  Ms. DiSilvio is a partner in the Cleveland office of Reminger Co., a member of the firm's executive and management committees, and chair of its health care law practice group.

Leo M. Spellacy, Jr. '96, a partner in Porter Wright's litigation department in the Cleveland office, was recently appointed to the Board on the Unauthorized Practice of Law of the Supreme Court of Ohio by Justice Terrence O'Donnell '71.  Mr. Spellacy focuses his legal work in Porter Wright's environmental, energy and government affairs practice groups.

Susan E. Petersen '97, a founding partner of Petersen & Petersen in Chardon, has been elected to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and the Ohio Chapter of ABOTA.  Ms. Petersen was also recently selected for inclusion in Ohio Super Lawyers List for 2013.

Friedman, have co-founded a new non-profit named the Mid-Atlantic Lyceum.  The Lyceum will serve as a tool to bring together diverse perspectives and peoples, including leaders with disabilities, to foster and promote more informed and civil dialogue and decision-making.  A chief project of the Lyceum is its Mid-Atlantic Journal on Law and Public Policy, which has successfully published its first issue and is in the process of organizing a second issue to be published in the fall of 2013.

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys announced that Janet L. Lowder '92 is the winner of the 2012 Powley Elder Law Award.  The award is presented annually to a NAELA member who is recognized in his or her community as a leader in promoting a greater understanding of the rights and needs of elders and people with special needs and of how elder law attorneys advocate for those rights.  Ms. Lowder is a partner in the Cleveland firm of Hickman & Lowder.

Howard E. Skolnick '92 joined the C|M|LAW Alumni Association as a Life Member.  Mr. Skolnick represents seriously injured clients in both State and Federal Courts, litigating cases involving a variety of causes of action, such as wrongful death, complex medical malpractice, nursing home abuse, product liability, motor vehicle crashes, uninsured and underinsured motorists, slip and fall injuries, and bad-faith litigation against insurance companies, as well as animal and dog bites, boating and water accidents, and pedestrian accidents.

Joseph J. Crimaldi '95 was elected a member of the McDonald Hopkins Law Firm in Cleveland.  Mr. Crimaldi is an intellectual property attorney who provides strategic planning and intellectual property asset management, both foreign and domestic, for start-ups, publicly traded companies and universities. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in a wide variety of technical areas and has drafted patent validity and infringement opinions in the areas of trademark prosecution and litigation.

Tamzin O'Neil '99 is an attorney with the Skolnick Weiser Law Firm in Cleveland in the firm's workers' compensation practice area. Ms. O'Neil's practice is focused on administrative hearings before the Industrial Commission and the Bureau of Workers' Compensation.

Scott M. Reminger Co. attorney Brian C. Lee '07 was recently selected to serve a one-year term on the Young Lawyers Steering Committee and also as the Young Lawyers Substantive Liaison for the Defense Research Institute (DRI) Law Practice Management Committee. The term begins in October after DRI’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans. DRI is an international organization of attorneys defending the interests of business and individuals in civil litigation.

Artwork by C|M|LAW Alumni Association Honorary Trustee Gary R. Williams '84 will be displayed at the Boston Mills Artfest on July 7-8 and the Cain Park Art Festival on July 13 -15.  Mr. Williams recently returned from a month long stay in a rural village in the Kajiado district of Kenya, where he learned of the plight of young girls, 12 - 15 years of age, who are taken out of school, married off in exchange for cattle, and subjected to genital mutilation as part of the marriage process. 30% of the proceeds from the sale of his Kajiado Series paintings will be donated to start a foundation to help the girls of Kajiado. 

Kenneth C. Ricci '86, Chairman of Flight Options, LLC, the second-largest company in the private jet travel industry, received the William A. Ong Memorial Award from the National Air Transportation Association. Presented annually since 1984, the Ong Memorial Award is given for “extraordinary achievement and extended meritorious service to the general aviation industry,” and is considered one of the industry’s most prestigious accolades. Mr. Ricci becomes the youngest-ever recipient of this lifetime achievement award.

Tim Trainer ’87 was a speaker at the US Commercial Law Development Program’s Eurasia Intellectual Property Customs Enforcement and Coordination Workshop for Armenian, Georgian and Turkish Customs officials in Tbilisi, Georgia, in October.  Aside from the Eurasia program, he conducted multi-day workshops on intellectual property protection and enforcement for Georgian Customs officials in Tbilisi and Batumi in October and November.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Daniel R. McCarthy '54, a dear friend of the Law Alumni Association and the College of Law.  Dan was a principal at McCarthy, Lebit, Crystal & Liffman Co., L.P.A., the firm he founded in 1959, and an influential member of the Cleveland community. 
 
Dan was a distinguished alumnus, generous donor, and special friend of the law school and the Law Alumni Association.  As a student, Dan was the first co-editor of the Cleveland-Marshall Law Review in 1953.  He was a member of the C|M|LAW National Advisory Council and a Life Member, Honorary Trustee, and Annual Recognition Luncheon honoree (alumnus of the year) of the C|M|LAW Alumni Association.  Additionally, his generosity was instrumental in affording our association the ability to upgrade our alumni publication, Law Notes, for which we will always be grateful.  Two of Dan's children are also graduates of our law school; Sheila '89 and Patrick '93.
 
Until we meet again, Dan, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Mr. Lombardo is a past president of C|M|LAW Alumni Association and a past mentor extraordinaire, as well as the recipient of the OAG Professionalism Award, presented to him in 2001 by then Attorney General Betty D. Russell Kornblut ’85, of counsel in the Cleveland office of Javitch, Block & Rathbone, published a non-legal work of fiction titled “My Name is Planky, the Real Life Story of a True Underdog.” A portion of the proceeds from the semi-autobiographical work will benefit the educational care of Mr. Kornblut’s two nieces who suffer from severe autism.

Former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Francis E. Sweeney '63 passed away on April 10.  Justice Sweeney served two terms on the Supreme Court from 1993 to 2004; he was honored by the C|M|LAW Alumni Association as an alumnus of the year in 2000.

Ohio Governor John Kasich appointed Tamara A. O'Brien '92 as a judge on the Summit County Court of Common Pleas.

Joseph S. Simms 96, counsel in the Litigation Practice at Ulmer & Berne in Cleveland, has been appointed to the Litigations Section Council of the Ohio State Bar Association.  Mr. Simms will serve a three-year term.

Leslye M. Huff '97 has been elected to the executive Committee of the Cleveland NAACP.  Ms. Huff was also elected Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the National Black Justice Coalition.

Timothy P. Trainer '87 conducted a series of intellectual property education and awareness workshoops in three cities of Bosnia-Herzegovina.  The programs were held in March for government officials, business representatives and university faculties.

Ohio Governor John Kasich appointed Robert C. McClelland '80 as a judge on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas. 

Robert Brundrett '10 is the Director of Legislative Affairs in the office of the Ohio State Auditor.

Richard W. Jablonski '94 is Senior Counsel at Progressive Group of Insurance Companies in Madison, Wisconsin.  Mr. Jablonski and Dr. Sarah McAchran, M.D were married in November, 2010.

Aja M. Brooks '10 is the Legislative Assistant for education and judiciary issues in Ohio Senator Rob Portman's office.

Daniel B. Bortnick '98 has joined the Cleveland law firm of Tarolli, Sundheim, Covell & Tummino as an electrical Engineering associate attorney.

Durin B. Rogers '94 was elected President of the Genesee County Bar Association for a two year term.  The Association is made up of attorneys from Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties in the state of New York.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Jon Wellinghoff has announced the appointment of Judge Steven L. Sterner '84 as a FERC Administrative Law Judge.

Linda L. Bluso '82, partner-in-charge of the Cleveland Office of Brouse McDowell, will head Baldwin-Wallace College's division of business administration, one of the largest of its kind in the state.  Ms. Bluso will continue to be of counsel with Brouse McDowell.
