Mentor Program Guidelines for Mentors and Students

Mentor Guidelines

  1. We will host a Mentor Program Informational Evening for both mentors and students where students and mentors will be matched, on Tuesday, September 14, from 5:00 - 6:00 PM in the Moot Court Room of the College of Law. If you are unable to attend the event, we have asked your student to make the initial contact with you either by email or by phone by October 1. Please make yourself accessible to the student: if you will be unable to return his/her phone call promptly, please advise the student that there may be a delay. If you are having difficulty scheduling the initial meeting or any subsequent ones, please contact Mary McKenna, Executive Director of the Law Alumni Association, at 216-687-2368 or by email mary.mckenna@law.csuohio.edu.
  2. If you are unable to attend a scheduled meeting with your student, please make sure to call to cancel and reschedule.
  3. Please make sure that your student understands that you are more than willing to help him/her learn about the law and the law school experience provided he/she lets you know what type of assistance is needed.
  4. Recognize that participation in the Mentor Program requires a commitment on the part of the mentor and the student. If there is a need to withdraw from the program, or you have any questions or concerns, please call Mary McKenna in the Law Alumni Office.

Student Guidelines

  1. We will host a Mentor Program Informational Evening for both mentors and students where students and mentors will be matched, on Tuesday, September 14, from 5:00 - 6:00 PM in the Moot Court Room of the College of Law. If you are unable to attend the event, you are asked to make contact with your mentor, either by email or by phone, by October 1. Please be assertive in making this initial contact - your mentor has asked to be in the program and even though he/she may be busy, he/ she has committed to take the time out for you. If your mentor has not returned your calls or you are having a difficult time making the initial contact, please see Mary McKenna, Executive Director of the Law Alumni Association, in Room 121 of the law school, call her at 216-687-2368, or email her at mary.mckenna@law.csuohio.edu.
  2. When a meeting is scheduled with your mentor, be on time and dress appropriately for the occasion. Remember, FIRST IMPRESSIONS REALLY ARE LASTING ONES.
  3. If you are unable to attend a scheduled meeting with your mentor, make sure that you call to cancel.
  4. Utilize your time with your mentor - ask questions and speak out; your mentor is willing and able to help you, provided he/she knows what type of assistance is needed.
  5. The mentor program is not a vehicle for employment, but a means to learn about law and the law school experience from the perspective of an established attorney.
  6. Recognize that participation in the Mentor Program requires a commitment on your part, also. If there is a need to withdraw from the Program, contact Mary McKenna in the Law Alumni office (LB 121) at 687-2368 or by email at mary.mckenna@law.csuohio.edu
