Location:  Cleveland Lake City Hall, 1 Lakeside Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44113

Credits Hours:  4 or 6 Credit Hour for Fall and Spring Term; 3 or 5 Credit Hours for Summer Term                                           

Prerequisites:  RCC; completion of at least 29 credit hours; minimum GPA 2.50; strongly recommend to have taken or are concurrently taking Estates & Trusts; and approval of site supervisor.

Students will have an opportunity to observe and assist with hearings and trials.  These hearings may include, but are not limited to, estate administration, release of assets, names changes, will contests, trust contests, concealment of assets and guardianships.  This externship will provide hands-on experience with all aspects of the Probate Court, and will include shadowing experience in all main departments.  Externs will have the opportunity to interact with the public by learning to take in applications and accounts and familiarize themselves with all aspects of the estate administration process.  Externs will assist the Judges, Magistrates and staff attorneys by performing legal research , drafting legal memoranda and providing case law updates.

 Students may register for 4 credits (16 hours per week) or 6 credits (24 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms; in the summer term, students may register for 3 credits (24 hours per week) or 5 credits (40 hours per week).  Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.

The Magistrate  will make the final selection of the student.
