Location: Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building, 1240 E. 9th Street, Suite 2075, Cleveland, OH 44199

Credits: 4 or 6 Credit Hours for Fall or Spring Term; 3 or 5 Credit Hours for Summer Term

Prerequisites: RCC, minimum GPA 2.50, completion of at least 29 credit hours, background investigation; approval by site supervisor.

The Coast Guard’s ninth District legal office has four military attorneys (judge advocates) and one civilian attorney.  The Coast Guard judge advocates advise Coast Guard decision makers throughout the Great Lakes in such areas as federal criminal law, military justice, administrative law, government ethics, environmental law, international law, and the interpretation and enforcement of various federal statues and regulations on boating, navigation, and shipping.  All attorneys, civilian and uniformed, also provide legal assistance to active duty military members, military dependents, and military retirees in matters ranging from consumer protection, wills, living wills, powers of attorney, landlord/tenant law, and family law.

Externship placement in the Coast Guard’s Ninth District legal office is available in the fall, spring and summer semesters.  Students will be given the opportunity to work in any of the practice areas discussed above.  Student work will typically involve legal research and writing but may also include drafting of federal regulations, participation in administrative hearings, and observation of proceedings in federal court.

Students may register for 4 credit hours (16 hours per week) or 6 credit hours  (24 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms;  in the summer term, students may register for 3 credit hours (24 hours per week) or 5 credit hours (40 hours per week).  Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor.  Graded Pass/Fail.

Interested students must contact the Office of Career Planning, LB 137 in the Student Services Center, 216-687-6871, career@law.csuohio.edu.  An Externship application, signed by Career Planning and student, a resume and writing sample must be submitted for consideration through Symplicity.  The Coast Guard Ninth District legal office will make the final selection of students.
