Location:  1223 West Sixth Street, Cleveland, OH 44113

Credits Hours:  4 or 6 Credit Hours for Fall or Spring Term

Prerequisites:  RCC, minimum GPA 2.50, completion of at least 29 credit hours.

The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland provides free legal assistance to low income clients and serves the communities of Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain and Geauga counties. The attorneys and staff represent families experiencing safety, financial and educational issues affecting their continued stability in matters such as domestic violence, divorce, child support and in juvenile court custody disputes where children are at risk.

Students will be exposed to a variety of cases and will work on issues that promote safety, economic self-sufficiency and empowerment. Students will learn the Domestic Relations Court, Civil Protection Order (CPO) and Juvenile Court processes. Students will assist the attorneys at all stages of trial preparation, including attending court hearings, interviewing clients, engaging in discovery, legal research, drafting trial briefs, legal memoranda, motions, pleadings, affidavits and other correspondence. Students will additionally observe legislative policy meetings.

 Students granted a Legal Intern certification from the Ohio Supreme Court are strongly encouraged to apply and will be allowed to represent clients in court where permitted.

Students may register for 4 credits (16 hours per week) or 6 credits (24 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms. Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.

Interested students must contact Office of Career Planning, LB 137 in the Student Services Center,216-687-6871, career@law.csuohio.edu.  An Externship application, signed by Career Planning and student,  a cover letter, resume and writing sample must be submitted for consideration through Symplicity. The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland staff will interview students and make the final selections. Accepted students must sign a confidentiality agreement.
