Location:  2500 MetroHealth Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44109

Credits Hours:  3 or 5 Credit Hours for Summer Term

Prerequisites:  Completion of at least 29 credit hours; 3.0 or better GPA preferred; Health Care Law (LAW 686) required; Corporations or Agency & Partnership useful but not required; and approval of site advisor.

The MetroHealth System is a county hospital organized and operated under Chapter 339 of the Ohio Revised Code. MetroHealth is one of the largest, most comprehensive health care providers in Northeast Ohio, serving the medical needs of the Greater Cleveland community for 170 years. More than 500 primary care and specialty care physicians practice within The MetroHealth System. Affiliated since 1914 with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Metro- Health is a center for medical research and education, with all active staff physicians holding Case faculty appointments. The MetroHealth System is comprised of a major medical center, a rehabilitation hospital, two long-term care/skilled nursing centers, an outpatient surgery center, and a network of community-based health care centers.

Externs will conduct legal research in any and all aspects of health care and related laws, draft memoranda, letters, and other documents, and prepare presentations to staff in the office. Externs will also shadow their supervising attorney and participate in day-to-day activities of the office. Additionally, externs will work with client departments and departmental staff to gather information and gain insight into and understanding of clinical, business, and health care operations of a large health system.

Students may register for 4 credits (16 hours per week) or 6 credits (24 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms; in the summer term, students may register for 3 credits (24 hours per week) or 5 credits (40 hours per week). Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.

Interested students must contact Office of Career Planning, LB 137 in the Student Services Center,216-687-6871,  An Externship application, signed by Career Planning and student,  a resume, writing sample (no longer than 10 pages) and transcript must be submitted for consideration through Symplicity. The supervising staff at MetroHealth will make the final selection of students.
