Location: 30 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215

Credits: 3 or 5 Credit Hours for Summer Term

Prerequisites: RCC, minimum GPA 2.50, completion of at least 29 credit hours; approval by site supervisor

This externship placement in the Ohio Civil rights Commission is available summer semesters.  The OCRC is responsible for enforcing the civil rights laws of Ohio and providing educational opportunities regarding civil rights issues.

Externs will be exposed to a diverse range of instructions regarding the law and practical hands-on experience by being assigned to task in the departments responsible for investigations, mediation and hearings.  OCRC externs will participate in developing legal skills such as interviewing and conducting advice and counsel meeting with clients, conducting legal review of responses submitted by Respondents after receipt of a charge, securing the testimony of witnesses, participating in mediation sessions, conducting legal research on civil rights law and the practice of law within an administrative agency.  The students will be encouraged to practice problem solving and strategy planning skills addressing housing, employment and public accommodation issues while under the guidance of the investigative team and legal counsel.

Students may register in the summer term, students may register for 3 credit hours (24 hours per week) or 5 credit hours (40 hours per week).  Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor.  Graded Pass/Fail.

Interested students must contact the Office of Career Planning, LB 137 in the Student Services Center, 216-687-6871, career@law.csuohio.edu.  An Externship application, signed by Career Planning and student, a resume and writing sample must be submitted for consideration through Symplicity.  The legal counsel at the Ohio Civil Rights Commission will make the final selection of students.
