Location:  UH Law Department, 3605 Warrensville Center Road, Shaker Heights, OH 44122

Credits Hours:  6 Credit Hours for Fall or Spring Term; 5 Credit Hours for Summer Term

Prerequisites:  RCC; minimum GPA 3.00; completion of at least 29 credit hours; preference for students with a demonstrated interest in health law and with Journal experience; excellent research and writing skills required; background investigation by the UH Law Department; and approval of Deputy General Counsel.

Externship placement is in the University Hospitals Law Department. Successful candidates will be exposed to a wide range of practice areas and topics, including general corporate practice, tax and nonprofit issues, employment law, real estate, and health care regulatory matters, including Stark law, Anti-kickback, EMTALA, and HIPAA.

Although externs will work primarily on transactional matters, there is opportunity for litigation and mediation experience. The position provides unique exposure to topics in hospital policy, patient care issues, and corporate governance. The successful applicant will be expected to work with all full-time lawyers, and will report to the Deputy General Counsel. Law clerks will also have the opportunity to work and meet with the General Counsel.

 Students may register for 6 credit hours (24 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms. Students may register for 5 credits (40 hours per week) in the summer term. Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.

The supervising staff at the University Hospitals Law Department will make the final selection of students.
