Second straight bar exam in which College leads state

Cleveland State University’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law had the highest passage rate for first-time takers of the July Ohio Bar Exam. The school’s passage rate was 93%, well above the state average of 79%.

This is the second consecutive Ohio Bar Exam in which C|M|LAW had the top passage rate, following its 82 percent pass rate for the February 2018 exam.

“First, I want to acknowledge the hard work of all our graduates who prepared for the bar exam, and congratulate those who passed and are now beginning their careers as licensed attorneys in Ohio,” says Lee Fisher, dean of C|M|LAW. “I would also like to thank all of the dedicated faculty and staff in our College who have provided the educational excellence, mentorship and support that have helped so many of our graduates be successful in their chosen careers.”

“When I saw my name listed on those that passed the bar exam I was overwhelmed with joy,” said 2018 C|M|LAW Graduate Alexander Messina. “Studying and sitting for the bar exam is such a grueling process, so when I came out on top on the first try, I felt like I could accomplish anything.”

The first-time pass rates for all Ohio law schools are:

•             Cleveland-Marshall (93%)

•             Ohio State (88%)

•             University of Toledo (84%)

•             Case Western Reserve (81%)

•             University of Cincinnatti (79%)

•             Capital University (71%)

•             Ohio Northern (71%)

•             University of Dayton (70%)

•             University of Akron (65%)

C|M|LAW offers its students several complimentary programs to help them prepare for the Ohio Bar Exam.  The College assigns a faculty mentor for each bar taker, who communicates with the student throughout their final two years of law school to ensure they are planning and preparing for the exam.  The faculty mentor then serves as a sounding board during the final weeks of bar preparation. Cleveland-Marshall faculty experts also review bar exam topics for their graduates who are preparing for the exam. Cleveland-Marshall provides a commercial bar exam preparation course to students at no cost beyond their tuition.

“I felt Cleveland-Marshall gave me every resource needed to prepare for and pass the bar exam,” said 2018 C|M|LAW Graduate Matthew Kurz. “The C|M|LAW faculty members, especially Bar Exam Preparation Director Mary Jane McGinty, Director of Student Success Professor Heidi Gorovitz Robertson and Academic Support Director Nicholas DeSantis, were very honest with us regarding the kind of effort it takes to pass the bar exam. I followed the plan provided by preparation services to a "T," and thankfully it all worked out.”

“This ongoing success for our graduates further highlights the continued rise of C|M|LAW as a nationally recognized center for innovative legal education,” Fisher adds.
