Morning Message 7.6.20 Jump Start a Dream.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” – Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Although we will be admitting students throughout July and even early August, we want to give an opportunity to those students who have already been admitted a chance to get a head start.

That head start begins this evening. We call it Jump Start.

Jump Start is a voluntary four-week program offered to all admitted students prior to the fall semester. Nick De Santis, Director of Academic Support, developed and leads the innovative program, and does a masterful job preparing admitted students for the first days of their first year.

Students often experience some anxiety over the summer before they start law school. I know I did. It’s primarily anxiety about the unknown. Law school is very different from the undergraduate experience. We want to help alleviate this anxiety and aid their smooth transition into law school.

Jump Start provides our first year students with a brief introduction to the law school experience and the American legal system, as well as instruction on essential study and exam-taking skills such as reading and briefing a case, outlining, and basic legal analysis. They will also take part in simulated classes and meet fellow students and faculty.

Most of our admitted first year students wisely choose to participate. As other students get admitted in the coming weeks, they may join the program in progress. Sessions continue every Monday and Wednesday through July 27th and this year the sessions will be virtual over Zoom. Orientation begins the week of August 17 and classes begin August 24.

Our commitment to quality academic support throughout the law school experience is a critical component in our student-centered vision. Here at CSU Cleveland-Marshall, students will find open doors and open minds and a level of accessibility, support, encouragement, and interaction that many law schools don’t offer.

This evening, I’ll have the opportunity to speak to our Jump Start students about some of the ways to succeed in law school and why a legal education is also an education in leadership and justice; hence our mission of Learn Law. Live Justice. It’s a way to make a real difference in peoples’ lives.

Our mission has never been more relevant; our need for scholarship support has never been more vital. It would mean a lot to us if you would take a moment to help a student get a head start on achieving their dream of making a difference in the world.

Jump Start a Student's Dream. Jump Start Our Mission.

Have a great day. Have a great week. Have a great new year.

If you missed CSU President Harlan Sands’ virtual Town Hall on Wednesday, June 24, you can see it
