Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

Credits: 4 Credit Hours for Fall Term; 3 or 5 Credit Hours for Summer Term
Prerequisites: RCC, preferred minimum GPA 3.0; completion of at least 29 credit hours; preference for student with moot court/mock trial or Law Journal, demonstrated public interest commitment, background investigation by the Federal Trade Commission; and approval of the site supervisor.
Externship placement is in the Cleveland office of the Federal Trade Commission. Students will assist and support attorneys and investigators in various Commission enforcement actions. The Federal Trade Commission investigates and litigates consumer protection matters involving violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act and trade regulation rules. Duties will include contacting consumer victims and drafting their statements, maintaining contact with consumer witnesses, document review, performing legal research, and writing memoranda.
Students must register for 4 credit hours (16 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms; in the summer term, students may register for 3 (24 hours per week) or 5 credit hours (40 hours per week). Students in this externship also participate in an Externship seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.
While students do not have to be U.S. citizens, additional documentation may be required, at a minimum will include copies of the student’s visa and passport.

An Externship Application, signed by Career Planning counselor and student, a resume, writing sample, law school transcript and list of references must be submitted for consideration through Symplicity. The supervising staff at Federal Trade Commission will make the final selection of students.
