Prerequisites: RCC; minimum GPA 2.50; completion of at least 29 credit hours; and approval of site supervisor.
This externship placement in the Office of General Counsel (OGC) at John Carroll University is available fall, spring, and summer terms. The OGC provides legal services to the University.
Externs will be exposed to an exciting and diverse in-house corporate practice, with an invaluable and practical hands-on experience. OGC externs will enjoy developing such practical legal skills as interviewing and conducting advice and counsel meetings with clients, conducting legal review of contracts, preparing trademark applications, interviewing, and preserving the testimony of witnesses.
With a focus on issues involving corporate law and governance, contracts, and employment law, as well as other legal issues unique to higher education, OGC externs will learn about this dynamic area of the law while they handle a wide variety of assignments, including conducting legal research, fact investigations, client interviews, drafting memoranda, and reviewing, drafting and revising policies, contracts and other corporate documents.
Law students who are interested in exploring in-house counsel positions, corporate law, nonprofit law, education law, or general practice will find that this is an excellent learning experience.
Students may register for 4 credits (16 hours per week) or 6 credits (24 hours per week) in the fall or spring terms; in the summer term, students may register for 3 credits (24 hours per week) or 5 credits (40 hours per week). Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.
