Prerequisites: RCC, minimum GPA 2.50, completion of at least 29 credit hours, approval of the General Counsel who will serve as the site supervisor.
Towards Employment is a community agency formed in 1976 that has assisted more than 115,000 disadvantaged adults (living near or below poverty level who are coming off welfare, have a limited work history, unstable housing, limited education, and/or criminal background) in Greater Cleveland successfully move from poverty to a paycheck. Since 2003, they have added services to help low-wage workers advance in their careers. With 45 staff members and a budget of $4 million, they empower individuals to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency through employment.
The legal extern will spend 10 weeks, full-time, with the 4-member legal team. 5 weeks will be spent on the civil side (more administrative) and 5 weeks on the criminal side (significant courtroom exposure), learning all components of overcoming barriers to employment for their clients.
This externship is available only in the summer term, and students must register for 5 credits (40 hours per week). Students in this externship also participate in an Externship Seminar conducted at the law school by the externship faculty supervisor. Graded Pass/Fail.
This is a wonderful opportunity for public service minded students who want to be exposed to both civil and criminal litigation.
