Milena Sterio, the Charles R. Emrick Jr. - Calfee Halter & Griswold Professor of Law at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, will speak on maritime piracy as part of the Cleveland State University About Town Speaker Series. Sterio’s talk will take place Monday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m., at the Acacia Reservation Banquet Center in Lyndhurst, Ohio.
Sterio will discuss legal issues relating to maritime piracy, including the definition of piracy under international law, jurisdiction to capture and prosecute suspected pirates, and the use of private armed guards onboard merchant vessels. She has published numerous articles on these topics, and has participated in the work of the United Nations Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia. Most recently, Sterio wrote On Crimean Secession, Fairness, and Self-Determination  for IntLawGrrls.com, a blog on international law, policy, and practice.
