Technology-related practice areas are among the fastest-growing legal markets. These include not only technology-specific practices like cybersecurity and data privacy but also the work within existing practice areas like health care where in-house and outside counsel are responsible for advising on issues ranging from data privacy and security to remote health care and the Internet-of-Things. Additionally, the technological proficiency necessary in everyday legal practice continues to evolve.
C|M|LAW Tech comprises an ever-growing menu of technology initiatives partnerships that prepare our students to enter the legal profession equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in modern practice and to help practitioners increase their professional skills.
The Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection
Launched in 2016, the Center has quickly established itself as a national leader in cybersecurity. The Center takes an approach that integrates law, business and technology to identify and address cyber risk and cyber management issues through education, training and applied research. The Center’s annual conference and public event series brings national leaders across these diverse fields to law school events, exposing C|M|LAW students to cutting-edge issues in this field and start building their powerful professional network.
The innovative Cybersecurity and Data Privacy JD and MLS (Master of Legal Studies) concentrations take that same integrative approach. Through a structured slate of classes and hands-on learing opportunities, Students are prepared to understand the technical and business dimensions of cybersecurity and privacy as well as the legal and regulatory frameworks.
Interdisciplinary Master of Science in Cybersecurity
In collaboration with the Monte Ahuja College of Business and Washkewicz College of Engineering at Cleveland State University, the Center is developing one of the first interdisciplinary cybersecurity degrees in the nation.
Each year, the Center hosts national leaders for a major conference that brings together experienced government officials, in-house counsel, business executives, cyber insurance leaders, litigators, information security officers and privacy managers to discuss current developments and best practices in cybersecurity and privacy protection. The conference is aimed at identifying innovative strategies that integrate legal, managerial and technical approaches to managing cyber and privacy risks. Past Keynote speakers include Acting Chairman Federal Trade Commission Maureen K. Ohlhausen, Former Chief of the Bureau of Enforcement Federal Communications Commission Travis LeBlanc, and Deputy Director for Health Information Privacy in the Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights Deven McGraw.
In addition, the Center hosted the only cybersecurity forum at the 2016 RNC convention and sponsors numerous other events throughout the year
C|M|LAW Tech Lab
C|M|LAW has partnered with TCDI, a 30 year eDiscovery and Litigation Management provider, in a new initiative that offers C|M|LAW students, as well as local contract attorneys and students from other area law schools, an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on work experience delivering innovative legal services to corporate and law firm clients under the supervision of TCDI’s legal experts.
Students accepted into the program will receive training and the opportunity to work on legal outsourcing engagements encompassing a broad range of disciplines. Examples include electronic discovery and managed document review; legal research and legislative tracking; contract review and compliance program support. The experience will be invaluable in helping prepare graduates to enter the workforce with a competitive advantage.
The program is housed in the Law Library and features a dedicated and secure 25-seat delivery center with state-of-the-art training facilities.
eDiscovery Technology Professional Online Certificate
Electronic discovery, or “eDiscovery” involves the identification, collection, preservation, and production of electronically stored materials, or “ESI”, before and during litigation. C|M|LAW offers an online certification program - the first of its kind in any ABA accredited law school - that allows law students and those seeking professional development to learn from leaders in the field and prepare for career opportunities.
Center Executive Director and Technologist in Residence
Bob Eckman, Chief Information Security Officer at MCPc, Inc. in Cleveland, serves as the Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection's Technologist in Residence and Executive Director. Eckman advises C|M|LAW on the development of technology-related education and professional development program and students on careers in the tech industry.
Internet of Things (IoT)
The IOT Collaborative (IoTC) is a partnership between Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Cleveland State University (CSU), with the generous support of the Cleveland Foundation, that shares ideas and assets, conducts groundbreaking research, discovers new resources, and educates future leaders to integrate IoT applications in manufacturing, energy, health care and civic infrastructure sectors throughout Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.
Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection Center Director Brian Ray is part of the IoTC multi-disciplinary Leadership Team. As the IoTC Cybersecurity Industry Liaison, he will work with industry partners and faculty experts on both campuses to develop shared opportunities for applied research, education and training programs to prepare students and professionals in law, business, urban studies and computer science to take advantage of the emerging IoT revolution.
Ethereum Enterprise Alliance
Cleveland-Marshall is an academic member of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance. The Alliance connects Fortune 500 enterprises, startups, academics, and technology vendors with Ethereum subject matter experts. Together, the members learn from and build upon the only smart contract supporting blockchain currently running in real-world production – Ethereum – to define enterprise-grade software capable of handling the most complex, highly demanding applications at the speed of business.
