First Assignment Fall 2025

Advanced Brief Writing

LAW 615 Section 2

Rebecca Lutzko

Assignment details

Our first class will commence Tuesday, August 26th (9:45 a.m. to 10:35 a.m.). We will NOT have class on August 21st; instead, as outlined in our syllabus, we will make up that class date as part of our last class session, on December 2, 2025, which will run as a double period (and indeed, beyond) to accommodate oral arguments.

First Assignment. Before our August 26th class:

A. Read Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 (subsections 2.1 and 2.2 only) in our textbook [Mary Beth Beazley, A Practical Guide to Appellate Advocacy (6th ed. 2023)], along with Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 28. Be prepared to discuss the same.

B. Log into Blackboard (Ultra) to obtain and print a copy of the course syllabus, which we will review in class.

PLEASE NOTE: You will need a Bluebook for this course. Although you are welcome to buy the latest edition (22nd, published in May 2025), that is not necessary. The 21st edition is sufficient.
