First Assignment Spring 2015

Criminal Procedure II

LAW 678 Section 61

Jonathan P Witmer-Rich

Assignment details

For our first class, look up the following cases on the Cleveland Municipal Court online docket, and the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court online docket:

1. Municipal Court: Case 1997 TRD 056518, Ohio v. Deonte Sweeney
2. Municipal Court: Case 1997 CRA 040966, Ohio v. Deonte Sweeney
3. Municipal Court: Case 1998 CRB 007514, Ohio v. Deonte Sweeney
4. Common Pleas Court: CR-97-359095-ZA, Ohio v. Deonte Sweeney
Do your best to answer the following questions about all of these cases. You are free to work together in groups if you want. You will not have to turn in written answers to these questions but you should be prepared to answer when I call on you.
1. When did the case start?
2. How did the case start? (meaning, how were the criminal proceedings commenced—not what did he do to get in trouble)
3. Did Sweeney have a lawyer?
4. Who was the lawyer, and how did he get the lawyer?
5. What was Sweeney charged with?
6. What was the ultimate resolution of each charge?
7. What was the time between when the criminal case began and when it was resolved?
