First Assignment Fall 2016

Legal Writing, Research and Advocacy

LAW 504 Section 9

Karin Mika

Assignment details

We will be meeting on Wednesday, August 16th at 6 p.m. for Orientation. The required books for the class are Oates and Enquist, Just Memos, (either the third or fourth edition is fine), the Bluebook (The most recent edition should be available in the bookstore.), and Legal Writing with Style (by me, Karin Mika and Terri LeClercq). Legal Writing with Style is only available through Amazon, and is the self-published version, as opposed to the editions published by Aspen or Wolters-Kluwer. It is bright red. You can't miss it.

For orientation, I would like for you to familiarize yourself with the structure of legal systems and legal analysis as described in the first few chapters of Just Memos. I would also like for you to read the preface and Chapter One of Legal Writing with Style. We'll be going over basic materials on Wednesday, so you need not worry about quizzes or memorization.

If you have questions, please email me at k.mika@csuohio. I am looking forward to meeting all of you next week.

Prof. Mika
