Legal Writing, Research, and Advocacy (L504, Section 10)
Fall 2017
For our first class on August 21, please do the following:
(1) obtain your required texts (listed below);
(2) read Legal Analysis: The Fundamental Skill, Chapter1;
(3) write a short essay (topic described below) and bring it to class in hard copy or email it to me (t.karelnull@csuohio.nulledu) by the end of the day on August 21st; and
(4) bring Legal Analysis and The Bluebook to class.
Your required texts for the course are as follows:
(1) Romantz & Vinson, Legal Analysis: The Fundamental Skill (2d ed. 2009).
(2) The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (20th ed.).*
(3) Sara Sampson, Katherine Hall, & Carolyn Broering-Jacobs, Ohio Legal Research (2d ed. 2015).
*Please get a print copy of The Bluebook. Electronic options and rentals will work for the other texts, but an electronic copy won't work for The Bluebook. It is an invaluable reference tool that you'll want to keep, so rental isn't a good option.
For your short introductory essay:
Please submit a short essay on your academic and professional background, why you chose the Master’s in Legal Studies program at Cleveland-Marshall, any career goals that you wish to share, and any other information about yourself that you wish to share. My goals in making this assignment are twofold: (a) to give me a sense of how you write, and (b) to provide me with information that will be helpful in creating assignments and discussions that will meet your interests and needs. The essay should be no more than 2 pages, so if you find your essay longer than that, make your ideas more succinct. These essays are for my eyes only, so please feel free to be candid.
