Assignment details

Welcome to my Legal Writing sections, 3 & 7! I'm looking forward to a great year with all of you. Please read this complete post. I will see everyone during Orientation, as our two classes Orientation week are a required part of the course.

Textbooks: There are 3 required books and 2 optional ones. In addition, we will be using my own materials, What Are You Trying to Say? A Guide to First-Year Legal Writing, that I will make available to you electronically. The books listed below may not be in the CSU Bookstore right away; you may purchase most of them from online sellers including the publishers but do be cautious buying the Bluebook online (see notes, below).

(1) Interactive Citation Workbook for the Bluebook 2019 edition (LexisNexis) ISBN 9781522176077 - REQUIRED - Notes: must be ICW for the BLUEBOOK, must be 2019 edition.

(2) The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation 20th edition ISBN 978-0-692-40019-7 -REQUIRED - Notes: Must be 20th edition. Buy from Bookstore or official Bluebook site as there have been counterfeits sold on other sites.

(3) Sloan, Researching the Law: Finding What You Need When You Need It (Second Edition) ISBN 9781454886495 - REQUIRED - Notes: Previous edition also acceptable.

(4) Wydick & Sloan, Plain English for Lawyers (6th Edition)ISBN 978-1531006990  - RECOMMENDED.

(5) Pollman & Stinson, Examples & Explanations: Legal Writing 3rd Edition, ISBN 9781454891222 - RECOMMENDED. Notes: Previous edition also acceptable.

FIRST CLASS ASSIGNMENT: For our first class on August 20, please read What Are You Trying to Say? Part I, attached here. You do not need to write out any of the exercises in the reading, but please be prepared to discuss them.

Finally, please complete your Law Library training as soon as possible, so you will be able to access Lexis and Westlaw. My course page will be on TWEN on Westlaw. I look forward to meeting you soon!
