Hello, and welcome to Advanced Brief Writing! Our required text is Mary Beth Beazley’s A Practical Guide to Appellate Advocacy, Fifth Edition. I believe this book will serve as a good reference work in law practice and therefore think that there is value in obtaining the most recent edition. But if you only have access to the Fourth Edition for cost or other reasons, that is no problem (although the page numbers included in assignments will not be the same). 

For the first class on Monday, August 23, please read Chapter 1 (pp. 1–11) and Chapter 2.1–2.3 (pp. 13–24).
