First Assignment Spring 2025

Criminal Law
LAW 506 Section 1
Shih-Chun Chien

Assignment details

Dear Students,
I look forward to meeting you. For your first assignment (week 1), read:
A. The Goals of Criminal Law
1. What is criminal law?
2. Why do we punish?
3. Whom should we punish?
4. How should we punish?
pp. 1-6
pp. 31-53
pp. 53-73
B. The Structures of Criminal Law
1. Jury Trials
2. The Presumption of Innocence and the “Beyond a Reasonable Doubt” Standard
3. Jury Nullification
pp. 6-9
pp. 9-19
pp. 19-29
The page numbers refer to the assigned textbook: Joshua Dressler & Stephen P. Garvey., CRIMINAL LAW: CASES AND MATERIALS, 9TH ED.

It's highly recommended that you get the 9th edition. The page numbering has significantly changed compared to earlier editions. If you choose to use an older version, you need to make sure that you're following the correct assignments. My syllabus follows the 9th edition page numbers.

Looking forward to a great semester,
Prof. Chien
