2023 Cleveland State University College of Law graduate Julian Gilbert was selected as 2024 recipient of a Burton Award, run in association with the Library of Congress, presented by Law360, and co-sponsored by the American Bar Association. Julian is the first person from CSU|LAW to receive this prestigious “Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award” which has been presented since 1999 for outstanding student legal writing.
The 15 winners, who will be presented the “Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Awards” on May 20, 2024, were chosen from the nominations submitted by the nation’s top law schools.
Julian’s article, “In Pursuit of a Modern Standard: The Constitutional Proportions of Collateral Harm From Pursuits and Police High-Speed Driving” was published in the Cleveland State Law Review. The article analyzes the contours of accountability for police chases and high-speed driving, taking a critical look at the standards of accountability as interpreted by federal courts throughout the country.
“I'm proud to represent our school with this award,” said Julian. “Legal writing is such a significant part of law school and writing this article had such a large role in my development as a legal writer.”
Julian graduated from CSU|LAW in May 2023 recent sat for the February 2024 Ohio Bar. During law school, Julian worked as an extern for the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Ohio and further developed his legal analysis and writing skills whilst working as a law clerk for criminal defense and civil rights law firms in the Cleveland area. In his final year of law school, he worked as an extern for the Honorable Judge Philip J. Calabrese at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Julian was involved in CSU|LAW’s National Lawyers Guild Chapter where he, with several other students, revitalized the defunct chapter into a thriving and active space for progressive law students.
