Monday Morning Message 11.8.21 Grit Counts - Especially in November

“As much as talent counts, effort counts twice.” ― Angela Duckworth

“ Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” -Samuel Johnson

“Let me tell you the secret that has led to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” - Louis Pasteur

This morning’s message is to our students, especially our first year students.

What sets our successful graduates apart from those of other fine law schools?

Of course, they are very bright and talented, but I submit there’s something else that distinguishes them from others – grit, perseverance and tenacity.

November is the most important month of the first semester. November is the month when your classes wrap up, and you prepare to succeed on your finals. You’ll be finalizing your outlines, drilling hypotheticals, finding knowledge gaps, and celebrating in your understanding.

Time management and focus are critical to gaining this understanding and balancing all of the demands you will be facing. Facing these demands feels lonely, but remember you are not alone.

The C|M|LAW community has resources that will help because we all want you to succeed. In particular, we have an outstanding Academic Support Team- Director of Academic Support, Nick De Santis and Academic Support Specialists Michelle Landever Bond and Bobby Stevenson are here to help you every step of the way.

Use these resources:

1) Take advantage of your professors’ office hours.

2) Review the old tests via the library’s website.

3) See our outstanding Peer Tutors and AEP Fellows.

4) Come to the Exam: Strategies and Tactics Workshop this Friday, November 12 at 1:30 pm in LB 237

5) Get more hypotheticals from Academic Support by contacting Bobby Stevenson (1Ls) and Michelle Bond (2Ls+)

Visit https://www.law.csuohio.edu/currentstudents/academicsupport for more information about Academic Support programing, or to make an individual appointment with our Academic Support Staff.

We will help you in any way we can. But ultimately you must persevere, and I am confident you will.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, watch last Friday’s virtual 4th Annual C|M|LAW Hall of Fame Celebration honoring our 2021 C|M|LAW Hall of Fame Honorees and our 2021 Leader on the RiseKimberly Kendall Corral '12.

Each of our honorees has demonstrated grit, perseverance, and tenacity throughout their remarkable careers.

If you missed out on the November 5 live stream, you can view the event online here at any time.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay Committed to Living Justice.

Have a great day. Have a great week.
