Monday Morning Message 2.14.22 137 Shots

In documentaries, there’s a truth that unfolds unnaturally, and you get to chronicle it. In narratives, you have to create the situations so that the truth will come out.” -Ava DuVernay

As part of our 125th anniversary, CSU Cleveland-Marshall College of Law is excited to announce the launch of our Social Justice Film Series on February 23 at 5pm in the Cleveland-Marshall Moot Court Room, in partnership with the CSU School of Film & Media Arts.

Please join us for the February 23, 5pm Panel Discussion with native Clevelander, Michael Milano, the Director of the acclaimed Netflix Film 137 Shots.

 Register Here

The film focuses on the 2012 police chase and fatal shootings of 43-year-old Timothy Russell and 30-year-old Malissa Williams by Cleveland police.

After a 22-minute car chase that reached speeds of 100 mph and involved 62 police cars from Cleveland and other cities, thirteen Cleveland police officers fired 137 bullets at the suspects. When the bodies of Williams and Russell were removed from the car, police found no gun or shell casings in the vehicle. The tragedy and subsequent trial of Cleveland police officer Michael Brelo attracted national attention on the need for police reform and accountability.

Milano will be joined on the panel by Damian Eduardos, Producing Partner and Director of Photography, Jackie Russell, sister-in-law of Timothy Russell, and Alonzo Mitchell III, Managing Partner of the grass roots organization Ohio Homecoming, who appeared in the film. The panel will be moderated by Russ Mitchell, Executive Editor and Lead Anchor, WKYC 3 News.

Once registered, you will receive a private link to the film so that you will have the opportunity to see it before the panel discussion. Clips from the film will be shown during the February 23 program. You can watch the trailer here.

Our special thanks to the following Co-Sponsors of the February 23 event:
