For the first week of class, please read pages 1-41 of chapter 1 in Menell et al, Intellectual Property in the New Technological Age: 2023.
In the first week, we will discuss as a class the benefits and tradeoffs of intellectual property and provide a framework to understand the differences between the core types of intellectual property protection available in the United States that we will be addressing this semester. Please come prepared with your analysis, opinions, and questions, which I look forward to hearing.
On the first day of the first week, we will discuss Problem I-1. On the second day of the first week, we will discuss Problem I-2.
We will be using Volume 1, Volume 2, and the optional statutes supplement to the textbook, each available here: https://clause8publishing.com/ipnta. To help you try out the class before you purchase the textbook, the first two chapters of the textbook are available for free download from the author's SSRN page: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4507044.
By the end of this semester, you will have an understanding of the core principles of intellectual property law and the capacity to issue spot if patent, trademark, copyright, or trade secret questions arise in your practice. This course will also help prepare you for more advanced courses on intellectual property law. I look forward to seeing you (virtually) soon!
Please check Blackboard in the days before class for a syllabus and the Zoom link to our class sessions.
