From the Deans' Suite - 4/2/26 - A Note That Made My Day

A few weeks ago, I received a note that truly made my day.

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office reached out to share how well one of our students, Arwa Elmashae, performed in her first oral argument as a Certified Legal Intern. Through Ohio’s Legal Intern Certificate Program, students can appear in court and handle real matters under attorney supervision—bringing their legal education into direct service of clients and community.

Arwa’s supervisor highlighted her preparation, professionalism, and confidence, and even shared a recording of the argument. After listening, I can say they were exactly right. Arwa was steady, thoughtful, and exceptionally well prepared. She responded directly to the court, demonstrated a strong command of the record, and carried herself with the kind of composure that signals readiness for practice.

Just as meaningful was the gesture behind the message. The Prosecutor’s Office took the time to share their experience with us—an act that reflects the strength of our partnership and their investment in our students. We are deeply grateful to that office and to the many organizations that mentor, supervise, and support our students in these real-world settings.

We are proud of Arwa and of every student who steps into a courtroom, a clinic, or an office to serve, to advocate, and to grow into the lawyer they are becoming.

Moments like this remind us that the true measure of our success is the success of our students.

Warmly,
Carolyn
