Monday Morning Message 11.18.19 Skate Where The Puck is Going

“I skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been.” – Wayne Gretzky

We pride ourselves in our ability to skate to where the puck is going – to adapt our curriculum and programs to meet fast-changing market demands. I am proud to announce that our newly created, fully online Master of Legal Studies in Cybersecurity and Data Privacy is officially accepting applications for spring 2020. This degree is designed for anyone who wants to understand the significant legal and business risks posed by cybersecurity, data security and data privacy.

Monday Morning Message 11.11.19 He Could Taste His Future

“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.”
― Dr. Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning

On this Veterans Day, I’m thinking about my father-in-law, the legendary West Side Cleveland City Councilman Michael J. Zone, who was a prisoner of war in WWII.

Monday Morning Message 11.4.19 It's Never about the Setback. It's Always About How We Respond.

“The impulse to hide bad news and instead offer rosy forecasts has a long history….denial is not inevitable, even if it is always a temptation. Dialogue- the capacity to discuss the undiscussable- is the antidote, and confidence makes it possible….” - Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Confidence

“Companies fail because success is viewed as deserved rather than hard earned…. People begin to believe that success will continue almost no matter what the organization decides to do, or not to do.” - Jim Collins, How the Mighty Fail

Monday Morning Message 10.28.19 Anything is Possible

“God, grant me the Serenity to accept that pursuing my dream is living a few years of my life like most people won’t….so I can spend the rest of my life like most people can’t.
The Courage to trust in my skills and have an unshakeable belief in myself.
And the Wisdom to know that nothing is impossible… and anything is possible.”

-Dean’s Serenity Prayer for First Year CSU Cleveland-Marshall College of Law (C|M|LAW) students

Last Friday evening, we had the special opportunity to celebrate our iconic past and invest in our exciting future.

Monday Morning Message 10.21.19 The Eyes of the Nation are on a Courtroom in Cleveland

“Addiction is the only prison where the locks are on the inside.” - Anonymous

UPDATE: Just minutes after I sent this morning’s Monday Morning Message (below), I learned that Judge Polster’s efforts to mediate and resolve the federal opioid litigation has resulted in agreements in principle with Cuyahoga and Summit Counties and defendants Teva, Cardinal Health, McKesson and AmerisourceBergen.

Monday Morning Message 10.14.19 In Just 10 Days....

Cleveland-Marshall’s mission: Learn Law. Live Justice. is more than just coursework, papers, exams ...it's a principle of …. making lives better. Law school can be an overwhelming process, but the purpose is for the aid of other people...the people who need our help navigating within a complex law-filled world.... that's why we signed-up for this journey...to let others know justice matters. -Sharon Kay Bäden ’19

Every day we educate and train the future custodians of our democracy. It’s a sacred trust that we take very seriously.

Monday Morning Message 9.30.19 Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it.

“We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” – Thomas Jefferson

“Elections belong to the people. It’s their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.”― Abraham Lincoln

“Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it.” – Susan B. Anthony

Monday Morning Message 9.23.19 A Law School Without Walls

I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” -Albert Einstein

We are a law school without walls.

Every week throughout the academic year, we facilitate free expression and foster a culture where our students learn not only in the classroom but also through engagement and respectful discourse and dialogue with experts and thought leaders throughout the world about the issues that shape our future.

Monday Morning Message 9.16.19 The Most Powerful Vision of Freedom Ever Expressed

“What makes the Constitution worthy of our commitment? First and foremost, the answer is our freedom. It is, quite simply, the most powerful vision of freedom ever expressed. It’s also the world’s shortest and oldest national constitution, neither so rigid as to be stifling, nor so malleable as to be devoid of meaning….What was revolutionary when it was written, and what continues to inspire the world today, is that the Constitution put governance in the hands of the people.” -former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor

Monday Morning Message 9.9.19 Their Future is our Future

“Words cannot express the gratitude I have for the scholarship you all have so kindly decided to offer me. You all have given me the opportunity to fulfill my destiny and for that I am forever grateful. My son will one day be able to say that his mother was given a chance despite financial hardship, and this blessing can teach him that if you dream big enough no obstacle will be big enough.” – 1L Student, Class of 2022

“There is this energy surrounding the school and its legacy and I want nothing more than to be a part of it. Thank you so much for everything through the process!” -1L Student, Class of 2022
