From the Deans' Suite - 11/26/25 - Thanksgiving Edition

As we head into Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting on the incredible spirit of generosity that defines our Cleveland State University College of Law community. Last Monday, I had the privilege of attending the Ohio Supreme Court swearing-in ceremony, where more than 80 of our newest alumni became attorneys, surrounded by their families and friends. It was a wonderful and inspiring occasion. Justice DeWine reminded the new lawyers of their responsibilities to their communities, of the unique role they play as people who understand the rules of our legal system, and of the importance of seeking opportunities, both within and beyond their practice, to make a difference.

Our graduates have already embraced that message. It made me especially proud to see that among all the law schools represented, our law school had the highest number of students—18 in total—recognized for completing more than 150 hours of pro bono service during their time in law school. That’s at least 50 hours of service each year they were in school! The next closest law school had 13 students recognized, and after that, the numbers dropped to single digits.
The following graduates were recognized by the Court:

  • Hani Baltagi ’25
  • Jalen Danzinger ’25
  • Caylan Fazio ’25
  • Molly Gillespie ’25
  • Paul Hergenroeder ’25
  • Nida Imam ’25
  • Betty Miller ’25
  • Amanda Moreschi ’25
  • Kinsey Obinger ’25
  • William Olmstead ’25
  • Rachel Osterhouse ’25
  • Cecilia Payne ’25
  • Sydni Porter ’25
  • John-Paul Richard ’25
  • Dennis Robinson II ’25
  • Deedra Thompson ’25
  • Matthew Weisman ’25
  • Lydia Wilson ’25

This distinction speaks volumes about the generosity and commitment to justice that our students embody. And as we approach Thanksgiving, it feels especially fitting to celebrate this spirit of giving back. It’s not just about the pro bono hours; it reflects a broader culture of care.

That same spirit of care is evident in the atrium this week, where three different drives are happening at once—collecting food for the CSU food pantry, toys for kids who might otherwise go without, and animal supplies for the Animal Protective League.

These examples are just a glimpse of the countless ways our students, faculty, staff, and alumni show generosity all year long.

Wishing you all a restful and grateful Thanksgiving.

Warmly,
Carolyn
