Professor Brian Ray will lead a research project to design and pilot a training program and student clinic to conduct data privacy and equity impact assessments for surveillance technologies that was recently selected for a $90,000 grant by the New America Foundation. Ray is partnering on the project with Drs. Patricia Stoddard-Dare (CSU Social Work) Chansu Yu (CSU Engineering) and several outside partners, including leading privacy advocates Kelsey Finch (Future of Privacy Forum), Brian Hofer (Secure Justice), and Lydia de la Torre (California Privacy Commission) as well as the CSU T.E.C.H. Hub. Their project is one of only 31 to receive funding in the national 2021 Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) Challenge.
