We are an iconic law school but we do not rest on our 121 years of laurels. We constantly plan for our future. We look around corners. We anticipate where the world is going and do our best to get there early.
Emerging and fast-evolving technologies, such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, have companies and law firms scrambling for legal talent that understands technology. We are educating that talent.
Our C|M|LAW Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection, led by Professor Brian Ray, is one of the first of its kind in the nation. Our Cyber Center is getting a great deal of media attention. See C|M|LAW Cyber Center in the News
Our new C|M|LAW Tech Program integrates the many exciting technology-related programs that we offer. Here's just a sampling:
- Global Legal Hackathon: C|M|LAW partnered with the CSU Monte Ahuja College of Business StartUp Vikes program andBakerHostetler to host the Global Legal Hackathon for Northeast Ohio February 23-25. The Cleveland site was one of 11 local sites in the United States and 40 throughout the world across 22 countries spanning six continents.
The winning group at the Cleveland competition, “Team INCO-Herent,” includes C|M|LAW students Dana Beveridge, Mara Hirz and Jackson Biesecker. Their winning project is an interactive website and smart contract application for shipping. The second place finisher, “Team GreySchool,” included C|M|LAW student Brendan Whitted. The group developed an interactive set of online games and information to teach the legal consequences of blackhat hacking. Both teams were coached by Professor Ray, who co-organized the event. Team INCO-Herent moves on to compete with the other 39 winners in the first international round in March.
- Protecting the Olympics from Hackers: A group of C|M|Law and CSU graduate students received a unique engaged learning experience while helping to ensure the 2018 Winter Olympics run smoothly thanks to a unique partnership between our Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection and the Cyber Resilience Institute( “CRI”).
The collaboration, which is part of our new Cybersecurity and Data Privacy concentration, placed students as credit-earning externs in CRI’s Sports Information Sharing and Analysis Organization. The effort worked with U.S. government agencies and international organizations to monitor potential cyberattacks targeted at global sporting contests including the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
- C|M|LAW Tech Lab: C|M|LAW has partnered with TCDI, a 30 year eDiscovery and Litigation Management provider, in a new initiative that offers C|M|LAW students training in the use of cutting-edge document review and analysis technologies, including predictive analytics and machine learning as well as the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on work experience delivering innovative legal services to corporate and law firm clients under the supervision of TCDI’s legal experts. National Jurist's PreLaw Magazine recently featured our exciting new partnership.

- March 22-23 -Two Days of Cyber, March 22-23 (15.0 CLE Credits Pending): Our Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection is combining our third annual conference with the Ohio Attorney General’s CyberOhio Business Summit to present two days of collaborative learning with cutting-edge topical discussions from national leaders in technology, business, law and government.
- April 6 -Cleveland State Law Review Blockchain Law & Technology Symposium, April 6 (7.25 CLE hours pending): Join a group of national experts to explore the rapidly evolving blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, including recent legal developments. From government services, to supply chain management, to "smart contracts," a range of industries are exploring transformative ways to implement the technology that created BitCoin and other cryptocurrencies.
